Savoir-faire, literally translated as ‘know-how’. In this issue of BILLIONAIRE, we highlight experts and craftspeople who are elevating and reviving ancient techniques; bringing them into the 21st century and beyond.
Take Féau Boiseries, a fifth-generation wood paneller in Paris run by Guillaume Féau, for example. His father had taken the family business down the interior-design road, away from traditional wood panelling. But Guillaume saw the opportunity to revive the old model, and now Féau Boiseries decorates some of the world’s most famous properties, including Palais Rose in Paris and Villa Ephrussi for Rothschild in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.
Staying in Paris, we met Valérie Maltaverne of Ymer & Malta, a former film producer turned furniture designer who engages traditional French artisans and inspires them to elevate their craft.
In Copenhagen we met husband-and-wife hatters Cathrine and Peter, behind Hornskov, a fine hatmaker. Based on the small island of Sorø, Peter made it his mission to revive the lost art of hat-making to Denmark and beyond.
And this issue's cover shows a snapshot of the immense work that goes into building a Steinway piano, even more complicated now with the latest Spirio technology. We tour the Steinway factory to meet some of the 200-odd craftspeople who contribute to making the 12,000-part masterpieces.
These are just a few of the journeys into the world's most authentic craft, in this issue of BILLIONAIRE.
