In our first issue dedicated solely to women, we celebrate high-profile females who have broken through the glass ceiling — pulling others up with them.

Against the odds, refugee-turned-Olympic swimmer Yusra Mardini has achieved enormous success, now giving back through a refugee-focused sports charity (p28). Kathy Sullivan who was part of the first cohort of female Nasa astronauts, was the first US woman to spacewalk, then worked in private and public science sectors and advised several presidents (p80). It doesn’t get much more inspirational than that.

Elsewhere we look at a nonet of female entrepreneurs in sustainability (p58), fashion designers defying the war in Ukraine (p140) and a handful of brilliant scientists finding solutions to global problems through bio-design (p88).
