In Billionaire’s first-ever Oceans Issue we shine a light on the crises affecting our seas, from the ever-increasing levels of macro and microplastics, to coral bleaching, to biodiversity loss and pollution, and the steps individuals and companies are taking to remedy the situation.

Hanli Prinsloo, the South African champion free-diver and ocean campaigner, is our cover star and our Op-Ed writer. Hanli is also the founder of the I AM WATER Ocean Conservation foundation, which has introduced thousands of impoverished young people to the oceans with transformative experiences.

At the other end of the ocean conservation spectrum, is Norwegian billionaire Kjell Inge Røkke, the founder of REV Ocean, the largest ever research and expedition vessel, due to make its maiden voyage in early 2027. The first scientific project will be on microplastics; and aboard the ship will be some 30 scientists. We also speak to Jo Ruxton MBE, the producer of the seminal documentary A Plastic Ocean, about the ripple effect from the film and her advocacy for the oceans; as well as Anna Marsden, managing director of the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, on the state of play following mass bleaching events in Queensland.

Design company Parley for the Oceans has for 12 years been at the forefront of materials innovations to find scalable plastic alternatives such as those made from banana skins or seaweed. Now its founder, Cyrill Gutsch, shares his next move to obtain buy-in from the world’s industrialists.

Technology and forward-thinking design offer hope. We look at the work of eight entrepreneurs building tech start-ups to answer sea-related problems, including UK-based Mura Technology, the next generation of advanced plastic recycling, turning waste plastic into fossil-replacement feedstock fuel. And we could hardly talk about ocean conservation without a visit to the Galapagos Islands, the ne plus ultra of exotic island travel, which, through strict management, has perfected the art of sustainable tourism.
