BILLIONAIRE - Print - The Escape Issue (#38)
BILLIONAIRE - Print - The Escape Issue (#38)
In Billionaire's Escape Issue we hear from a handful of next gen philanthropists and social entrepreneurs who are helping those less fortunate to break barriers, such as Amar Singh, a 35-year-old British-Indian art and NFT dealer and philanthropist, who has pledged millions to raise the profile of female, minority and LGBT artists.
We hear from 24-year old Maggie Grout, a girl, abandoned as a baby in rural China and later adopted by an American family, to go on to pioneer 3D printed school building in Madagascar to help tackle education deprivation - from lack of bricks and mortar settings. She is now backed by philanthropists such as Jennifer Gates, John A Sobrato, Michael B Kim and fashion designer Gabriela Hearst.
An impressive young leader is Katherine Lorenz, president of the Cynthia and George Mitchell foundation who is maintaining her grandparent's signature on the Gates/Buffett Giving Pledge. In 2010 George Mitchell signed to donate a substantial portion of his assets to struggling students, dedicated scientists, and families - Lorenz tells us how she is upholding his legacy.
Between LA and Nigeria, second-generation philanthropist Afam Oynema is running GEANCO, a charity with a glittering array of celebrity supporters. Nigeria needs major humanitarian help, but convincing people to give, with ever more fear over scammers, has been over a decade's work, he says. We speak about their impact on girls' health.
Elsewhere in the issue we escape to the remotest parts of the globe, such as our beautiful journey to the island of Senja, Norway, offers a set of mesmerising landscapes with a population of less than 15,000. Our intrepid writer Clara Le Fort describes how "the rocky terrain is so exposed to the elements that some houses are wired to the ground to resist the storms." Not for the faint of heart.
Rather more comfortable, but no less nature-inspired, visits in this issue include trekking through the Rwandan mountains area of Volcanoes National Park, as well as a stay on a traditional cowboy ranch in Montana and a hiking holiday through the canyons and red deserts of Utah around legendary hotel Amangiri, our cover story.
